how to avoid draconian cell rates in Italy accessing zaptel 2 US

Hello, I am in Roma for a month and am sad to see the very high rates of at least 50 US cents per minute that my TIM Telecom Italia pay as you go mobile incurs when I use either of the Rome local access numbers. I am calling land lines in the US and am going broke fast. Any suggestions (other than write letters and send via Vatican Post) would be appreciated. The only suggestion I can receive from clerks in the TIM stores is to get access to a land line (not possible), or if I were here often enough, I could use one of TIM's lower call rate and pay each month plans. It becomes harder and harder to find WORKING pay phones in areas that are quiet enough to communicate, so that is not a viable option.

Mille Grazie,

CJ
