Phone Cards vs. Mobile Phones - Which should you use?

October 25th, 2009

“Why should I use a phone card when I can just set up an international calling plan with my mobile provider?”

Great question.  With such a broad variety of mobile phone plans out there, it can be much easier to have an international calling plan set up with your mobile provider, but it’s important to know that adding this can come with a great cost.  Depending on your overall international calling need, a phone card may still be the best way for you to save money on your out of country calls.

Recently, we did a study where we compared our best phone card rates with the rates of the large mobile phone providers in the USA.  We added in all the service fees the providers charge as well as looking at our phone cards with additional fees to make sure we were looking at the total cost you would pay for your calls.

While we assumed that our ZapTel rates were lower than the mobile phone international dialing plans, we were surprised at how much savings everyone could be getting.

Depending on your calling destination, you can save anywhere from 22% to 98% on your international calls with your ZapTel phone card instead of dialing direct with your mobile provider.

Now that’s real savings!

So if you’re reasearching whether to use a phone card or your mobile provider for your international calls, I recommend that you do the math before buying.  Click here to learn how to do the math with your phone card.  You can use the same principals when doing the math with your mobile provider.

Also, you can use your ZapTel phone card from your mobile phone.  Before doing so, click here to read our recomendations on how to use your phone card from your mobile phone.
