Here’s to many happy returns! And thoughts on the future of telecom from Ron

(Written by Ron Reimann, President of ZapTel)

ZapTel is really a great example of what happens when you pull together a great group of dedidated, caring employees, telecom providers who take pride in their quality and low cost, and loyal customers that appreciate a small company that strives for an excellent experience from first visit to your most recent telephone call.

I am proud of the business we have here;  I hope you can tell.

So what is next in telecom?

The telephone system, the cable system and the Internet are converging into one worldwide digital network carrying voice, video, and data.

What does that mean for you, who typically cares most about convenient, low cost yet high quality telephone calls from one country to another?

More choices for sure.  There are more and more ways to connect voice callers all over the world.    You might consider four factors when choosing a service:

– what equipment do you require on each end to complete a call?

– what quality level in both reliablity of connection and voice quality can you expect?

– what rate do you pay?

– how convenient is it to initiate and pay for the call?

What does this mean for the prepaid phone card service that you are so familiar with?

Well, first, all you need on each end of the call is a telephone.  Land line or mobile.

Second, ZapTel’s carriers route calls over the highest quality routes, whether they are “regular” fixed line or VoIP.

Third, phone cards have an inherent cost advantage because they are prepaid, so we don’t have the cost to create and mail bills, or to collect late bills, so rates can be lower

Fourth, payment is simple with a credit card, you can decide how much calling time to prepay, you get no suprise bills, and no long term commitment is required.

Add all that up and the prepaid phone card model has a secure place for those that value these features.

Phone Card Innovation

Earlier this week Aimee reviewed some of the innovations we already offer on most ZapTel phone cards.  What else might you expect?

Besides the obvious quest of looking for ways to lower the rates you pay, we see more and more customers that are pretty attached to their laptops, iPhones and Blackberries.  So we are researching and developing ways to enhance those devices further with our international calling services.   You should hear more about these efforts soon.

I listen to our customers for input on what they’d like to see.  So if you have an idea, please email it to me at suggestions@zaptel.com.  I read every one  and will reply if you include your contact information.

So this is the final blog write up for our 10th Anniversary Week.  Tonight at dusk the fireworks display starts.  I’m not sure how we’ll do a virtual fireworks display but here is a very nice fireworks display for you from Grant Park in Chicago: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SPVkboMGsu8
