Nov. 19th Tip - Get the Most Minutes from Your Phone Card

November 19th, 2007

“How can I get the most minutes out of my phone card?”

With any phone card purchase, you want to make sure that you are getting the best product you can for your money. Before purchasing a phone card, you need to evaluate your calling needs. Will you be using the card many times throughout the week? Will your conversations be long or short?

Below you will find helpful tips to make your phone card purchasing a little easier.

Cards with Additional Fees

Pros: You usually receive a lower rate per minute.

Cons: The additional fees will lower your available balance, which will reduce the number of minutes you receive.

Best Use: If you make frequent, long phone calls (30+ minutes in length), you may benefit better from a card with additional fees.

Flat Rate Cards

Pros: No additional fees so billing is clean and easy to keep track of.

Cons: You may be paying a higher rate per minute.

Best Use: If you make less frequent, shorter phone calls (less than 30 minutes in length), you may benefit better from a flat rate card.

EXAMPLE:

Let’s say you call to Germany 3 times a week and speak for 60 minutes each time. You are trying to decide between the True North flat rate card and the Europe’s Best which has additional fees.

True North Cost: At a rate of 3.9¢ (using the toll free access number) the total cost would be $7.02.

Europe’s Best: At a rate of 2.2¢ (including a 15% surcharge per call and 79¢ weekly service fee) the total cost would be $5.35.

You would save $1.67 per week by using the Europe’s Best card, even though it has additional fees.

However, if you only call to Germany once every week for a month for 20 minutes per call, the card you should choose will change.

True North Cost: At a rate of 3.9¢ (using the toll free access number) the total cost at the end of one month would be $3.12.

Europe’s Best: At a rate of 2.2¢ (including a 15% surcharge per call and 79¢ weekly service fee) the total cost at the end of one month would be $5.20.

You would save $2.08 per month by using the True North card.
